Megafires in a Warming World: What Wildfire Risk Factors Led to California’s Largest Recorded Wildfire

چکیده
Massive wildfires and extreme fire behavior are becoming more frequent across the western United States, creating a need to better understand how megafire will evolve in our warming world. Here, spread model Prometheus is used simulate initial explosive growth of 2020 August Complex, which occurred northern California (CA) mixed conifer forests. High temperatures, low relative humidity, daytime southerly winds were all highly correlated with rates modeled spread. Fine fuels reached very dry levels, accelerated simulation heightened heat release (HR). Model sensitivity tests indicate that HR most sensitive aridity fuel moisture content. Despite impressive early observed fire, shifting ignition September heatwave predicted >50% increase HR, as well increased nighttime activity. Detailed analyses develops can help personnel prepare for problematic ignitions.

Risk Externalities, Wildfire Hazard, and Private Investment to Mitigate Wildfire Risk in the Wildland-Urban Interface
Homeowners in areas adjacent to wildlands – in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) – can mitigate the risk that their home will be damaged in a wildfire by creating “defensible space” on their property. This article explores homeowners’ incentives to invest in defensible space using a unique data set on 35 WUI communities in Nevada. This is the first study to analyze homeowners’ incentives to in...
متن کاملWildfire risk adaptation: propensity of forestland owners to purchase wildfire insurance in the southern United States
The economic and ecological damages caused by wildfires are alarming. Because such damages are expected to increase with changes in wildfire regimes, this calls for more effective wildfire mitigation and adaptation strategies. Wildfire adaptation options for forestland owners include purchasing wildfire insurance, which provides compensation to those insured if a wildfire damages their properti...
متن کاملCoupling the Biophysical and Social Dimensions of Wildfire Risk to Improve Wildfire Mitigation Planning.
We describe recent advances in biophysical and social aspects of risk and their potential combined contribution to improve mitigation planning on fire-prone landscapes. The methods and tools provide an improved method for defining the spatial extent of wildfire risk to communities compared to current planning processes. They also propose an expanded role for social science to improve understand...
متن کاملWarming and earlier spring increase western U.S. forest wildfire activity.
Western United States forest wildfire activity is widely thought to have increased in recent decades, yet neither the extent of recent changes nor the degree to which climate may be driving regional changes in wildfire has been systematically documented. Much of the public and scientific discussion of changes in western United States wildfire has focused instead on the effects of 19th- and 20th...
متن کاملScenarios for future wildfire risk in California: links between changing demography, land use, climate, and wildfire
Over 21,000 future California residential wildfire risk scenarioswere developed on amonthly 1/8° grid, using statistical wildfire models. We explore interactions between two global emissions scenarios, three climate models, six spatially explicit population growth scenarios derived from two growth models, and a range of parameters defining properties’ vulnerability to loss. Scenarios are evalua...
